FUNDING CHANGES

NDIS FUNDING HAS CHANGED

May 26, 20252 min read

If you’re getting a new or reassessed NDIS plan, your funding will now be released in smaller chunks over time instead of one big amount upfront.

Here’s what it means – made simple

What are funding periods?

Instead of getting your full budget on Day 1, your plan will now be split into “funding periods.”

  • Most supports (Core & Improved Daily Living) = released every 3 months

  • Home & Living supports = released monthly

  • Assistive Tech & Home Mods = released all at once

Unused funds roll over into the next period.
But: They don’t roll into a new plan when your current one ends.

When do they start?

Funding periods begin from your plan start date – not the start of the month.

Example: Plan starts on 15 June? That’s when your first period begins.

Who can see your funding periods?

  • You (in the NDIS portal)

  • Your Plan Manager

  • Your approved Support Coordinator

  • Other providers can’t see the breakdown.

How does claiming work now?

Your Plan Manager can only claim supports within the current funding period.

If your service crosses over two periods?

Two claims are needed – one for each.

If a claim goes over the available budget, it will be rejected.
You can’t use future funds early, but you can use leftover funds that rolled over from a previous period.

Can I move money between periods?

No – you can’t shift funds between periods.
If you need more flexibility, ask your “My NDIS Contact” for a plan variation or reassessment.

Is my plan still flexible?

  • Core supports = usually flexible (unless stated otherwise)

  • Capacity Building = can be flexible, but some (like Improved Daily Living) may be “stated” – check your plan!

What about Early Childhood plans?

Same rules apply – funding periods will affect all new plans, including for young children.

Already have a plan?

If your plan was approved before 19 May 2025, this change doesn’t apply to you yet.

What you should do now:

1. Speak up at your planning meeting
Need more funds at the start (e.g. for equipment, Behaviour Support, or Support Coordination)?
Tell your planner and put it in writing. They can approve more funding upfront if there’s clear evidence.

2. Check your service agreements
Make sure your agreements match your funding periods – or you might end up with out-of-pocket costs.

3. Ask for help early
If things change, don’t wait until funding runs out. Request a reassessment early.
